5 Claims Revised and Developed

1) When Marji was inventing torture games, she was merely a product of the war environment. Marji lived in an environment surrounded by violence, anger, and most importantly war. She is a young girl and during school she invented a game where the loser would be punished with war punishments. Some of these punishments included the â€Å"mouth filled with garbage† method or the twisted arm method. While most kids may know the difference in right and wrong, Marji grew up in an area where she had no choice but to be brainwashed by society and the war. She heard about war tactics from her Uncle Anouche, she saw the violence on the streets, and she even saw dead bodies. Most young children only see those things on movies and video games, and even then they can be negatively affected. However, for a child to see these things daily she can only assume it is the norm. Marji was psychologically affected by the war and her environment, which led her to believe the terrible things she saw were normal, and thus it resulted in her being a product of her environment. 2) Marji chases and wants to attack Ramine. Ramine symbolizes the war, and Marji attacking him symbolizes Marji wanting to put an end to war. To Marji, Ramine symbolized the war, the evil, and all the conflicts in her country. Marji discovered that Ramine’s father killed people, which lead Marji into a rage. Marji chased after Ramine with nails between her fingers wanting to hurt him for what his father had done. She had no reason to be mad at Ramine because he had not killed anyone. However, she began to realize that the war was constantly showing up in her life and affecting her life. She was filled with anger, and she longed for the war and violence to be over. When she was trying to put an end to Ramine, symbolically she was trying to put an end to the war. 3) The torture game Marji invents shows her strong desire for power. In a country where no one has any power, Marji longs to have power. She devises a game at school where the loser gets punished with torture methods like the â€Å"mouth filled with garbage† method and the twisted arm method. She comes up with this idea because she sees the people in the war who have power use violence to gain that power. Although it is wrong to gain power that way, Marji has such a strong desire for power that she doesn’t care what she has to do to earn it. Marji ends up feeling so powerful that after school she stares at herself in the mirror and her reflection shows herself with devil horns. This demonstrates that not only does Marji want power, but she doesn’t care if the power comes with being evil. 4) By attempting to attack Ramine with nails, Marji believes violence is the way to obtain justice for what Ramine’s father did. When Marji found out that Ramine’s father killed people, she immediately wanted to obtain justice. She wanted the evil people to face the consequences and be punished. She rallied up her friends and they all put nails between their fingers and chased after Ramine. Marji could have gained justice a different way. She could have talked to Ramine’s father, but instead she chose violence. Marji chose this method because throughout the war they try to gain justice through violence. She heard of war tactics like the twisted arm method, and she knew those methods caused pain. She knew those tactics caused so much pain that they eventually caused regret in a person whose done wrong. Since Marji believed Ramine and his family had done wrong, she believed to gain justice she needed violence to do so. 5) Marji chasing after Ramine is simply a way for Marji to distract herself from her self-conflicting battles. Marji chases after Ramine with nails between her fingers. Although she claims she does it because Ramine’s father was evil, the true reason she did it is because she needed a distraction from her own conflicting battles. Marji struggles daily with who she is, how she identifies herself, and where she wants to be in life. Ramine, although young and highly affected by his father’s opinions, he knows who he wants to be, and he defends his father even though Marji and her friends are threatening him. Marji, on the other hand, doesn’t know where she wants to be, and she doesn’t know where she belongs. She fights battles with herself and that causes a lot of built up anger and frustration. Marji’s only solution was to take out her frustration on someone who she unknowingly is jealous of, which happened to be Ramine because he knows exactly what he believes in.

Personal Learning And Thinking Skills Education Essay

The challenge of capturing Black Marias and heads when sing the hereafter or when prosecuting in statistical analysis is best tackled through duologue so that students can see and joint their thought and instructors can tap in to their logical thinking. With this in head, possibly a better start point might be:‘In this country it may rain tomorrow or it may non, and yet the chance that it will rain tomorrow is by and large non 50 % – discuss and explicate your believing with grounds. ‘The outlook that pupils back up the value they choose for a chance with grounds gives them the chance to uncover their apprehension. This sort of concluding with grounds demands to be modelled through critical duologue between the instructor and the students. One manner to assist students develop the accomplishments of logical thinking and account is to work more often on the mental facets of managing informations including chance. Explicit links can be made between the managing informations rhythm and the manner we work with chance. There are utile analogues with the rhythm both in illustrations where we use an experiment to happen the estimation for a chance or where we solve a job utilizing theoretical chances. In add-on instructors need to be after for treatments which compare theoretical and experimental methods: their rightness, drawbacks and advantages in peculiar fortunes. It is clear that accomplishment in utilizing fractions, decimals and per centums as portion of a chance computation demand to be considered as a precursor to undertaking chance jobs. In the chief, nevertheless, advancement in chance depends mostly on understanding thoughts, instead than geting farther accomplishments. Finally, as chance is an rating of what might go on in future, it is of import to carefully take linguistic communication so that the event described is placed in the hereafter. For illustration, ‘What is the chance that I will hit 7 on two dies? ‘ makes more sense to pupils than, ‘What is the chance that I scored 7 when I rolled two die? ‘Key ProceduresRepresenting: If students can stand for informations as portion of a statistical question so they are better positioned to go responsible citizens who can choose and sift information thoughtfully and utilize mathematics with assurance to inform decision-making. Representation is a major focal poin t of Probability, of import in binding together the determinations students make at the different phases. In a statistical question, stand foring is portion of about all elements of the managing informations rhythm. It involves: Proposing a job to see utilizing Probability methods, bordering inquiries and raising speculations Deciding what informations are relevant and identifying primary or secondary beginnings Planing ways of capturing the required informations, including understating beginnings of prejudice Making representations of the informations, including the usage of ICT, for illustration, tabular matter, grouping, arrays, diagrams and graphs.Analysing:Mathematical logical thinking is required at all phases of happening the chance of an event When stipulating and planning by working logically, placing restraints and sing available techniques ; besides by researching speculations and utilizing cognition of related jobs When roll uping informations by working consistently, researching the effects of changing values in state of affairss where there is random or systematic fluctuation when processing and stand foring informations, doing connexions within mathematics and placing forms and relationships, and doing usage of feedback from different audiences when construing and discoursing consequences, explicating and warranting illations drawn from the informations, recognizing the restrictions of any restraints or premises made ; utilizing feedback to reevaluate initial speculations and adjust facets of the managing informations rhythm. Using appropriate processs involves pull stringsing informations into suited signifiers for accurate representation, computation and communicating. This will affect supervising the truth of methods and solutions. Appropriate processs in a Probability question are: utilizing systematic methods for roll uping informations from primary and secondary beginnings. To build tabular array, diagrams, etc to show informations in an organized signifier. Calculating experimental and theoretical chances. Interpreting and measuring: Interpretation and measuring consequences is cardinal to any statistical and chance question. It includes: construing chances when measuring the likeliness of a peculiar result comparing distributions and doing illations looking at informations to happen forms and exclusions sing the effects of alterations to the informations ( e.g. taking outliers, adding points, doing relative alterations ) appreciating why the readings placed on informations have a grade of uncertainness and can be misdirecting Appreciating converting statements, but cognizing that these do non represent cogent evidence. Communicating and reflecting: Effective communicating and contemplation is of peculiar relevancy in statistics. It includes: fixing a brief study of a Probability question, utilizing tabular arraies, tree diagrams, etc to summarize informations and support readings and illations drawn from the informations utilizing precise linguistic communication to summarize cardinal characteristics pertinent to the speculations raised showing support for decisions in a scope of convincing signifiers showing a balanced decision where consequences are non converting Sing alternate attacks if consequences do non supply sufficient groundsRange and content:All my four chapters begin with usage of an empty figure line, and develop the construct of puting events on a graduated table along this line. I would wish to observe that there is a wholly separate, but no less interesting, narrative environing the advantages of utilizing a figure line to assist pupils form cardinal apprehension of graduated table and an thought of topographic point. In old ages 7 and 8 there is an accent on the linguistic communication of chance ( as mentioned earlier ) , and evidently there is a differing degree of complexness to the inquiries covered in each book, but basically we see a go oning metaphor and consistent type of inquiry. The basic paradigms of picking cards from a battalion and rolled die are used in all three books, and we see a gradual displacement towards jobs with more than one variable. Until twelvemonth 9 there is accent on the fact that a chance graduat ed table runs from 0 to 1, and work continues on use of simple fractions, whilst the twelvemonth 9 book assumes such cognition and moves into sing comparative frequence therefore associating back to discernible statistics. This seems critical to me, as we need to promote the inquiring of, and trying to understand, consequences, and I would possibly hold liked it to hold been included earlier. Finally, in old ages 8 and 9 students are expected to do usage of sample infinite diagrams, therefore supplying another graphical word picture of the chances of given results. Give students a choice of statements on cards and inquire them to sequence on a chance continuum such as this Sequencing events harmonizing to their chance can reenforce the utility of the chance line every bit good as stimulating treatment about the comparative opportunity of different events. The chance of acquiring at least one six when two dies are thrown The chance of acquiring a multiple of 3 when one die is thrown The chance of acquiring a tail and two caputs when three coins are flippedImpossible Unlikely Likely Certain0 1 The undertaking gives pattern in measuring an consciousness of the results which are possible in each context. Students may take to cipher or may wish to exemplify some of the results. Either will assist to warrant their ranking of the events relative to one another. We are sometimes expected to appreciate the opportunity of one event relation to the opportunity of another, rather different event, for illustration, ‘You are more likely to decease traversing the route thanaˆÂ ¦ ‘ Matching Associating different fortunes to a given chance is an activity based around the figure and coloring material of otherwise indistinguishable counters in a bag. This engages students in working out the possible figure and scope of colors of counters in a bag given a certain chance such as those shown below. Initially the work is in braces traveling to larger groups to portion thought. P ( Red ) = A? P ( Red ) = 1/2 and P ( Blue ) = A? P ( Red ) = 1/2 and P ( Blue ) = 1/4 P ( Blue ) = P ( Green ) P ( Blue ) = P ( Red ) and P ( Green ) = 1/2 P ( Red or Green ) = 2/5 P ( Yellow ) = 1/2 and there are 6 ruddy counters P ( Red ) = 3/7 and P ( Green ) = 1/3 P ( Green ) = 1/4 and there are at least 8 xanthous counters Together students should seek to happen as many ways as they can of reacting to the undertaking, discoursing consequences as a whole category with students taking on a critical function to spot similarities and differences between the solutions and to infer the of import characteristics of the counters in the bag in order to fulfill the given chance. In other words, the joint thought gives them the chance to generalize the solutions. To simplify the undertaking, the figure of possible colorss could be limited. To widen it, see giving the chance of an event non happening, for illustration P ( non Red ) = A? P ( Pink ) = 1/5 and there are 4 different colorss Which chair: trees to grouping subdivisions. This is a simple scenario which produces some unexpected consequences and so promotes farther believing about ciphering combinations of results. One student sits on the in-between chair of a row of seven: an indifferent coin is flipped a caput means move one chair to the left a tail means move one chair to the right. Repeat the procedure twice more. Pupils work in braces to reply the inquiry: How many of the chairs is it possible to complete on after the three somersaults of the coin? A ‘tree diagram ‘ could be used to construct on the motion and visual image to place all possible sets of motion. It is interesting to discourse with students how the two signifiers of diagram both illustrate different facets of the job ; see Resource sheet: Which chair? on page 67. The ability to happen and enter all possible results for consecutive events or a combination of two or more experiments is indispensable if students are to understand, happen and utilize chances or estimations for chances in more complex state of affairssUsing a chance factTwo bags A and B contain indistinguishable coloured regular hexahedrons. Each bag has the same figure of regular hexahedrons in it. An experiment consists of taking one regular hexahedron from the bag. The chance of taking a ruddy regular hexahedron from bag A is 0.5. The chance of taking a ruddy regular hexahedron from bag B is 0.2. All the regular hexahedrons are put in an empty new bag. What is the chance of taking a ruddy regular hexahedron out of the new bag? Students should separately compose down a ‘gut ‘ response and so compare their replies in little groups. The usage of specific illustrations to reply the above will be utile but students need to portion these and be encouraged to generalize. What happens if the chance of picking a ruddy regular hexahedron is the same for both bags? What happens if you change the chance of picking a ruddy regular hexahedron from each bag? What happens if you change the figure of ruddy regular hexahedrons in one bag? In both bags? All phases of this job demand that pupils place the facts environing a state of affairs. It has the possible to uncover misconceptions around chances of related events and offers the chance to generalize an result where the intuitive response is frequently wrong.Personal Learning and Thinking Skills ( PLTS ) :The Leading in larning programme has been developed as portion of the National Strategies Secondary support for whole-school betterment. My strategy of work is intentionally structured so that students look beyond capable confines to believing and larning more by and large. There is a focal point on specific believing abilities and to promote systematic development of believing accomplishments and transportation of larning across topics and to other facets of students ‘ lives. A cardinal apprehension of chance makes it likely to understand everything from bowling norms in cricket to the conditions study or your opportunities of being affected by snow! Probability is a important country in mathematics because the chance of Particular events go oning or non go oning can be critical to us in the existent universe. Today the Probability theory used to do intelligent determinations in economic sciences, Management, Operation Research, Sociology, Psychology, Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, and Genetics where hazards and uncertainness are involved to pull a decision about the likeliness of events or values. Here are given some illustrations of chance: – What are the opportunities that England Cricket squad will win the series? A A What is the Probability that it will rain tomorrow? What is the chance about stableness in Gas monetary values in following month? Planing for inclusion: Show how your strategy of work programs for inclusionvitamin E ) AppraisalWith Increased attending being paid to the consequences of national trial and external scrutiny statistics being published to measure the public presentation of schools, the possible value of appraisal for student is frequently overlooked. All excessively frequently assessment is seen as an impersonal, formal procedure which is done to students. Their advancement is measured, attributed a class or mark, and this is so reported to others the appraisal procedure appears to hold small value for the pupils themselves. However, if appraisal is to heighten larning so its formative intents must be emphasized. The students need to appreciate how the appraisal may lend to their acquisition and go involved in moving on the information which the appraisal has provided. My chief concern in measuring my students ‘ acquisition was the advancement of my efficaciousness in learning the subject. My appraisal, hence, needed to be effectual and consistent with the outlooks of student acquisition. Therefore Is have chosen formative appraisal as this would better kids ‘s acquisition. â€Å" The alone characteristic of formative appraisal is that the assessment information is used by both teacher and students to amend their work in order to do it more efficient. There is small point in roll uping information unless it can be acted upon, and since assessment information is certain to uncover heterogeneousness in the acquisition demands of a category, the action needed must include some signifier of differentiated instruction. † ( Professor Paul Black, 1995 ) My formative appraisal of my students ‘ advancement would include: Appraisal of descriptions and accounts given by students in both unwritten and written work. The medium for this appraisal would include mental maths, inquiries in category, category exercisings, prep and Plenary. Homework was set every Friday and collected in on Monday. As Tanner and Jones reference â€Å" Teachers appraisal of pupils work is basically an on-going and informal activity dwelling of inquiring inquiries, detecting activities or measuring advancement. For such appraisal to be formative there must be feedback into the learning procedure. † Therefore all the prep books were marked and given feedback on: A class, harmonizing to schools prep marker policy A general remark ( e.g. ‘untidy work ‘ ) An direction ( e.g. , ‘show your workings ‘ ) A specific marks which indicates what needs to be done following in order to better ( e.g. , ‘revise your 8x tabular array ‘ ; ) Correction of mistakes ( e.g. , in computation, spelling, method ) 2. Appraisals of single ‘s public presentation in pair/group work or whole category activities or treatment. This would be assessed harmonizing to: a ) Shared communicating which reflects student ‘s assurance with chance B ) Understanding of the job which reflects on the degree of the work ( utilizing traffic light signal ) degree Celsius ) Working on undertaking – which may be subjective by the propensity of my activities vitamin D ) Communication – utilizing linguistic communication of chance vitamin E ) Attitudes – which may be influenced by the context of the job The model for my formative appraisal was based on appraisal schemes adopted by the APU. I had considered merely those schemes which I thought would reassign easy into the schoolroom for naming or measuring the accomplishment of single students.

Hunting and Fishing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Hunting and Fishing - Essay Example Although fundamental for man’s survival, Culture is equally fragile as it keeps changing hence across generations, certain cultural aspects have been lost in all societies. Perhaps there are no other groups of people that have rich and much told culture like the Native Indian-Americans. They possess a great history of struggle and success and many of today’s life practices of the Americans like; teepee, peace pipe and moccasins, are borrowed from the Indian-Americans2. As noted above, Food is a fundamental aspect of every culture, hence a comprehensive study into the Indian American food related practices gives sufficient information of their cultural background. The research paper will therefore focus on one aspect of culture, hunting and fishing as a source of food and the role the two practices played within the indigenous culture of the Indian-Americans. ... Boys had to learn the hunting and fishing skills early in life. A story is told of a boy 8 years of age who in his first hunt he killed a goose, took it to his father who showed it to the whole community and at 10 years of age he killed his first Buffalo and the whole community rejoiced with the family, to Indians, successes in hunting were happiness to the whole family and community at large4. The hunting tribes’ important wild animal for hunt was the Buffalo which they hunted in twice yearly; during winter and summer. During the hunting periods, particular communities the whole village could go for hunting for fear of attack from hostile tribes, carrying all they needed for the journey in ponies putting women in charge while the rest of the luggage was buried and dug up upon return. They made camps at night and in the morning again break the camp and continue with the journey. They moved in single way and young boys kept watching for the Buffalo herds which they approached w ith great care done under the leader when spotted at a distance.5 The disparities and unity brought by hunting and fishing There were a number of ways that Native Americans obtained food key among them of which included, farming and domesticating animals, hunting, fishing in lakes and rivers and gathering wild fruits6. Company Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 9

Company Law - Essay Example The United Kingdom Company Law Act 2006, the brought in new regulation redefining the role of the directors. Directors then if not supervised well may overlook their responsibility, and that’s why courts all over define that they hold Fiduciary positions in the company. Directors are deemed as the major body to which the duties of managing general affairs of the company are delegated (John 2006) Company Act enacted on November 2006, brought about revolutionary changes to the United Kingdom law, which had existed for more than 40 years. For years, the mandate of interpreting the law on companies was left to the courts. The main goal of introducing this law was to modernize the law and make it relevant to the modern businesses and the prevailing conditions of this century. The Act, among other things, tries to streamline and lay the legal requirements for the administration of private companies, which form the majority of the United Kingdom Companies. According to (Law Teacher 2013), the law also introduced new measures to improve the integrity of company information. It also gave the shareholder the powers to intervene in the governance of the companies (Sheikh, 2013). A case by Howard Smith Ltd v. Ampol Ltd, involving the duties of directors brought mixed reactions in courts while defining the extremes directors can use their power. In this case, the directors had issued la rge numbers of shares, which in turn deprived a specific shareholder the basic right of voting in matters concerning the company. Before the introduction of this crucial enactment, the law of the directors of the companies was a mixed up between common law and the statute law. Directors had for a long period taken to have a fiduciary relationship to their companies. Therefore, the new law brought a codified law that clearly describes the responsibilities of the company directors. The codified law then applies to all directors of a company and

Predictors of Medication Errors in Elderly in Nursing Homes Research Paper

Predictors of Medication Errors in Elderly in Nursing Homes - Research Paper Example The National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (2011) explains that "A medication error is any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use while the medication is in the control of the healthcare professional, patient, or consumer.† This means that medication errors do not only occur at the hands of medical professionals. In this essay, the writer review predictors of medication errors in elderly in nursing homes. This means that the bulk of the writer’s attention shall be based on factors that medical practitioners in nursing homes and taking care of elderly people can use to predict possible medication errors. As seen in the definition of medication errors, the writer’s view of predictors shall be varying and widespread, not centering only on the health practitioner but on all other causative factors including patients and consumers. Predictors of Medication Errors in Elderly This section of the essay reviews five major predictors of medication errors that can take place among elderly people in nursing homes. Number of Home Medications The fact that elder people under consideration are based on nursing homes should not eradicate the possibility of medication error occurring as a result of a number of home medications. Nursing officers and other health professionals taking care of elderly people in nursing homes must predict the fact that once admitted at the home, the history of a number of home medications received by patients before their admission at the nursing home can interfere with the efficacy and functions of medications administered to them at the nursing home. For this reason, it is rightly appropriate that nursing and other health professionals have a fair idea of medications patients on admission might have received at home before being admitted. Over the years, it is because nursing practitioners have been negligent of the need to assess the number of home medicati ons taken by elderly patients admitted at the nursing homes that Prasanatikom and Madigan (2004) concluded in a research that â€Å"incidence of medication error was highest at the first visit (23.5%)† Self-administration of medication Self-administration of medication is something that is common among elderly patients in nursing homes. Pollick explains that self-administration of medication or self-medication is the â€Å"practice of using illicit or legal drugs without proper medical supervision is known as self-medication.† The commonest cause given to the problem of self-administration of medication among elderly patients in nursing homes has been found to be over anxiety among the elderly patients (Akakpo, 2003). As a matter of fact, due to degeneration psychological problems among elderly patients, they tend to be very anxious about their health and always have a feeling that taking medications in overdose or taking extra medications aside what is prescribed for them may lead to a quick recovery of their health. Health practitioners in nursing homes must, therefore, have a forecasted knowledge that if self-administration of medication takes place among their patients, the patients risk the problem of medication error because there is the tendency of self-medicated drugs conflicting with the functions of prescribed drugs.

Michael Porter's 5 Forces for Target Research Paper

Michael Porter's 5 Forces for Target - Research Paper Example As Labrador states, â€Å"the lower the barriers are, the easier it will be for competitors to come in†. Future competitors of Target include both local and international retailing companies. Therefore, to remain on the top positions in the country, the company continuously monitors its business strategy of providing best quality products to customers in the lowest prices. The bargaining power of suppliers is neither very strong nor very weak. Although Target provides good support to suppliers’ businesses, suppliers have been able to retain the power to control products’ prices because of increased competition between the discount stores operating in the United States. Along with increased competition, lowering of import barriers and low cost international labor are some of those factors, which have directly affected the bargaining power of suppliers. â€Å"The ability of consumers to buy substitute goods leads to the buyer power force† (Vitez). Buyers have a strong bargaining power in the United States. Although Target is operating a number of discount stores all over the United States, but the ever increasing number of other discount companies has strengthened the bargaining power of buyers. Customers can move to some other store if they find that store offering low prices as compared to Target. Target needs to keep the prices low and competitive in order to maintain its market share. Target has low threat of substitute products. The reason is that discount stores of Target and all other companies offer low prices to the customers as compared to general stores. Customers always want to buy products from the stores, which offer low prices. Although used products’ stores also offer low prices, but customers prefer to buy new products with the same prices that used products’ stores offer. Therefore, Target is far away from the threat of

Segmentation Essay Example for Free

Segmentation Essay Market segmentation is where marketers split the market into groups with similarities that would make it easy to target their product to the consumers, if they do not do this then they could waste money and time on targeting the wrong people. The company would be trying to maximise their sales so that they can gain as much money as possible. Using market segmentation could mean a business could gain a commercial advantage as they would be advertising to a specific audience, they would be matching target audience and the product effectively. Demographics are where the companies target market would be to a group because of their Gender, age, race/nationality, family size, occupation and education. For example McDonalds advertise happy meals to children because they would keep bugging their parents to take them to get them it. Geographic’s are where the companies target market would be to a group because of where they live, for example an expensive store wouldn’t come to Burnley because most of the residents are working class and don’t have a lot of money. Psychographics are where the companies target market would be to a group because of personality, lifestyle and interests. For example subway would advertise to people with a healthy lifestyle. These segmentation methods are used to split up the market so business can find the perfect target market, if companies didn’t use these methods then the companies wouldn’t have a good understanding of the people they are trying to advertise to. ACORN or A Classification of Residential Neighbourhoods, is used to segment the market into different classifications, the classifications are split up into 5 categories, which are: †¢ Wealthy Achievers – wealthy people who already have good, well-paid jobs, †¢ Urban Prosperity – wealthy people who are aspiring to have good, well-paid jobs, †¢ Comfortably Off – people aren’t particularly wealthy but have a decent sized house etc. †¢ Hard Pressed lower classed people, who are live in high rise flats etc. Moderate Means – working class people, live in terraces. Another method of segmentation the public are is a system created by Experian called Mosaic, this assigns people to groups based on their post code, neighbourhood etc. and it makes assumptions about peoples likes, dislikes and lifestyles based on their postcode area. †¢ A Career professionals living in sought after locations †¢ B Younger families living in newer h omes †¢ C Older families living in suburbia D Close-knit, inner city and manufacturing town communities †¢ E Educated, young, single people living in areas of transient populations †¢ F People living in social housing with uncertain employment in deprived areas †¢ G Low income families living in estate based social housing †¢ H Upwardly mobile families living in homes bought from social landlords †¢ I Older people living in social housing with high care needs †¢ J Independent older people with relatively active lifestyles †¢ K People living in rural areas far from urbanisation McDonalds target markets are happy meals, saver menu, portion sizes, fillet o’Fish, breakfast and hot drinks; the happy meal is targeted towards children as they will use pester power to make their parents take them to McDonalds. They sell small portions that contain a healthy snack and you get a free toy in them, the toy is themed towards a children’s cartoon film, they normally advertise on nickelodeon, cartoon network and Disney channel because that’s what most children watch. They advertise after 3 o’clock because that’s when most children get home from school as if they advertised before 3 o’clock then not a lot of children would see it; the happy meal would also suit the elderly as they won’t be able to eat a big meal. The saver menu would suit students and people who don’t have a lot of money; it would suit students as they won’t have to spend a lot of money on the larger meals and they can spend it more important things or going out at the weekend. It would suit people who don’t have a lot of money as they are relatively small portions and it is only 99p for a burger so it is a cheap. The portion sizes would be good for when people who aren’t particularly hungry or they are really hungry, as if they aren’t hungry they can get a medium meal, If they are really hungry they can get the large meals. This is good as it creates more of a target market for McDonalds to attract. The Fillet o’Fish as people who don’t like eating meat can get this instead of just getting chips, this is good as well as it McDonalds look like they are family orientated and they don’t miss anyone out. The McDonalds breakfast suits people who have to get up early as they do normal breakfast meals instead of a burger they could get sausage or something else. The hot drinks are good for when it is winter as people won’t want cold drinks as they would want warm drinks like coffee or hot chocolate etc. McDonalds will have a variety of different targets for their products and services. 4 examples can look at: Families: Families are targets as when families go out, they normally go to places that the kids will enjoy as if the kids aren’t happy, then parents will not be happy as they will be seeing their children unsatisfied with where they are. McDonalds will advertise all they can to make it look more appealing to all generations of families, These services aim towards providing friendly environments for the customers to have fun at and enjoy meals at affordable prices. They will be close families, as they will be visiting places with the idea of where is best suitable for the kids and themselves to enjoy themselves. The gender is not again specific as families could be of mixed gender. The age range will be from 1+ as a nice little outing to McDonald’s with the family is always nice. Parents with Children: parents with children will take their child to McDonald’s to give their children a treat. This is a product that McDonalds has produced to attract children between the ages of 1-10, as it has a free toy with the meal it is aiming to attract children and not only will the food be a treat but they will also get a free toy to play with. The target markets for happy meals is the parents buying their children food will be identified as young children ranging from ages of 1-10 as the toys that come with the happy meals look suitable for children of that age. Teenagers: Teenagers usually have limits to how much they can spend on food, As they may have limited pocket money or more important ideas of something they may want to purchase so cannot afford to spend their money on fast food. This is why they are attracted to the saver menu, the saver menu is where you can buy food for a reasonably price. Also teenagers are known to be the main users of social networking sites and users of the internet, so the idea of free WIFI access available in their restaurants is also another way to attract people to their restaurants. So, the target market for the saver menu will be identified as someone who wants to enjoy McDonald’s at an affordable price and the target market for the free wifi will be mainly teenagers as a stop at a restaurant for a quick check of their social networking sites will tempt them to buy something quick to enjoy whilst they are in the store. The age range for both the saver menu and WI-FI will be from 16+ as people from the age of 16 + are identified to be the age range of social networking sites and the saver menu is for everyone. Local Workers: Whilst on their breaks; local workers may pop in to the closest McDonalds, they have nearest to them to have a hot meal as it’s usually served very quickly and this makes it very efficient for the workers as they may have a short break. The lifestyle of these regular workers will be busy as they are working and may not have enough time in mornings to prepare dinner before they leave so they visit cafe/restaurants that are close by to eat in at and then head back to work. Also, they will need reasonable prices as they may have budgets for their dinner/meals. Gender of local workers will also not be specific in this case as you can be of any gender to have a job. The age range will be that of 18+ to about 65, as 18 is the age you most people start working and usually people retire at 65 and are not likely to be regular customers, as fast food places as due to being older than maybe teenagers, they have to be more careful with their diets as they can be more affected easily health wise with regular takeaway consuming. A Business Person: a business person will visit McDonalds during the morning, maybe for a brew or the breakfast, Also their food can be eaten in a vehicle without it affecting a busy work schedule, as they can use the drive thru, McDonalds have many drive thru’s which is a service that makes it efficient for people that may not have enough time to eat in to enjoy their products in their vehicles. The target market for a drive thru will be busy people that do not have enough time to eat in. The gender for business customers will be both male and female as in the modern world. The age range of established and busy business people is most likely to be about 30+.

Coach Carter Review

Coach Carter Review Coach Carter is a 2005 film directed by Thomas Carter. It is based on a true story, after the Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter portrayed by (Samuel L. Jackson) made headlines in for benching his undefeated team the Richmond Oilers due to poor academic results. In this essay I will be explaining how the film Coach Carter presents one or more key characters in a positive light. Many of the characters are seen in a negative light at the beginning of the film however as the film progresses many of the characters change and are seen in a positive light. I have analysed the character of Timo Cruz. I have done this by focusing on film codes and conventions such as Camera Angles and lighting. The character of Timo Cruz is portrayed in the film by Rick Gonzalez .His character is portrayed in a negative light at the beginning of the film. He is very rude to many of his fellow players and Coach Carter. He is very stubborn and short temped. A good example of his attitude would be on coach carters first day. After five minutes of Ken Carter being coach he gets in a fight with him. He verbally abuses the Coach and even attempts to hurt him. The coach responds by getting him in a headlock and slamming him against wall and asks him to leave his gym one more time. Timo angrily walks out of the gym screaming This Aint Over! and vows never to return back to basketball. He goes back on the street trafficking and selling drugs with his cousin Renny. Film codes and conventions help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz. The Film director has used the film codes and conventions such as Camera Angles and lighting. In the beginning of the film the director has used intense lighting. Intense lighting creates both harsh light and harsh shadow. It is used to create a harsh mood, to conceal someones face or emotions or to indicate that something or someone is bad. Whenever Timo is in shot Timos Face is usually half hidden and not always showing making him making him look dark and hidden. The producer has used this to show his dark and hidden personality from view. This type of lighting gives an idea to the audience that there is more to Timo then meets the eye and it might not be all that nice. Also during the beginning of the film the director has used the low angle is a camera angle that looks up at a character. This is the opposite of a high angle and makes a character look more powerful. Timo Cruz likes to believe that is he scared of nobody and he is the most valued player in the basket ball team he believes he is powerful and strong and everyone is afraid of him. That is why the producer as used that shot to show that Timo believes that he is strong and powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character giving him the impression that he is intimidating person. The character of Timo Cruz begins to change during the film. In the beginning of the film Timo left the team because of a dispute between the coach and himself. However as the film progresses Timo becomes aware of what he has done and asks to join back on the team. The coach is firm on his Decision however the coach gives in and gives Cruz a chance to come back on the team. Carter challenges him with the impossible task of 1000 suicides and 2500 pushups to be completed in less than a week. Cruz tortures himself to do it, and with the help of his teammates also doing suicides and pushups, he is able to complete them and Coach Carter allows him back on the team. This shows that instead of Cruz just quitting he pushes himself to do it. This is a major character change not to give up and do things to your best ability. When Coach Carter stops basketball practice because of the teams bad academic performance, Cruz Quits the team for a second time, eventually going back to work for Renny. L ate one night, Renny (Timos Cousin) is shot and killed on the sidewalk while Cruz is walking back to him after greeting his friends from the team. Cruz ends up at Carters house that night, apologizing for his behaviour and begging him to allow him back on the team. So Carter lets Cruz back on the team, saving him from a future like his cousins. The actions Timo has done shows that he now realises that his Actions can heavily result on his future and this is a major sign of change. Film codes and conventions again help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz as he changes during the course of the film. Firstly the main film code that has changed to show Timo in a positive light is that there is a bit more lighting. Whenever Timo is in shot we can now see a bit more of his face. Showing his expressions and feelings towards Coach Carter and his team mates, the director has done this to show that Timo is beginning to show himself and his real personality. Also now whenever Timo Cruz is with Coach Carter there are high shots of Timo Cruz. High shots are used to make the subject of the shot small and un-powerful. This is a huge change from the low shots from the beginning of the film. The director has used this shot to show the audience that Timo is now beginning to realise that he is no-longer in power and Coach Carter is. He is no-longer the mean intimidating person he once was .He now looks venerable to Coach Carter and his school and teammates. By the end of the film the character of Timo Cruz is now shown in a positive light. As Coach Carter Leaves to team Timo decides to tell him what his deepest fear is (throughout the film the Coach has been asking Timo what is his deepest fear) Timo Cruz replies: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people dont feel insecure around most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the you. We are all meant to shine as children do. Its not just in some of us; its in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Sir I just wanna say thank youyou saved my life. This quote means that his own fear is to not fulfil his true potential quoting Marianne Williamson in her book, R eturn to Love. From Timo calling everyone Niger to resighting poetry is a huge positive jump .Since returning on the team he has left the drugs trade for good. At the end of the movie it states he was successful of getting a scholarship. He now attends Humboldt State University where he plays basketball as a starting guard The Final film codes and conventions help the audience to gain an understanding of Timo Cruz and how he is now successful and is shown in a positive light. Firstly Timo can be fully seen in every shot there is no more intense lighting to show that he is a bad person, but the audience can completely see him in every shot. When can see all the expressions on his face, also there are no longer any high or low shots to make him look powerful or venerable there is only one shot the medium shot. This shot shows all of Timos expressions on his face. The director has used this shot to show that he is very happy and feels successful. It may be argued that the character of Timo Cruz motivates viewers .This is because despite Timos low odds of becoming successful or in case going to college he comes from the bad side of Richmond; He doesnt have a loving and supporting family, He goes to a school which has horrible academic standards and low morale, he with his cousin Renny are in the drug trafficking business. So with all of his problems stacked against him he still manages to become successful at the end of the movie it states Timo now attends Humboldt State University where he is a starting guard and also studding subjects. This motivates People including me that anyone with the attitude to can be successful no matter where youre from or who you are you can shine. Overall I have analysed how the character of Timo Cruz has succeeded despite adversity. I have shown how The director Thomas Carter has cleverly used film codes to show how Timo Cruz has been portrayed in both a negative and positive lights through lighting and Camera Shots. To show that however you are raised or where ever you are that anyone can succeeded and be successful.

Garden Design for the Blind :: Architecture Design Essays

Garden Design for the Blind It is a commonly known fact that the removal of one sense sharpens and enhances the perception of the others. We as humans are very centered on sight, and we tend to give less weight to our other senses when it comes to perceiving the world around us. For the most part, our environment tends to consist of designs made for us to experience visually. We do recognize sound as important, but when we are not actively listening to music or speech, sound tends to fade into the background. While we don’t really notice it’s there, sound serves to give us many clues about our surroundings. Our sense of touch is also important in many ways. We can use it actively, feeling many aspects of the world around us; a simple touch can read the temperature, surface texture, and hardness, among other things, of an object in our surroundings. We also possess a sense of kinesthesia, which involves cues from our muscles that give us information about the way our bodies are moving through space. An important component of this system is our balance system in our middle ear. This lets us know when we are or are not in a vertical position. Our leg muscles can tell us the conditions of the surface upon which we are walking and how far we have traveled. Easily the most overlooked sense is the sense of smell. Most of us rarely think about it, but studies have shown that of all the external stimuli that affect the way we do things, odor might be the biggest influence on our behavior. Scent is a major component of memory, especially of pleasant memories. A whiff of a particular smell, perhaps lavender, might bring back memories of weekends at Grandma’s house, where the linen closet was scented with lavender sachets. Studies have linked changes in emotion and even basic instincts to our sense of smell. The French have a restaurant called â€Å"dans le noir?† (or â€Å"in the dark?†) in which seeing people get an experience that is almost like being blind. They are guided to a table by waiters, some blind and some sighted; they eat their entire meal in the complete darkness. The principle behind this is that in the absence of sight, all the other senses are heightened.

Somalia vs United States Essay -- Compare Contrast Comparison

Somalia vs United States Somalia, which is about the size of Texas, is a small country located in Eastern Africa next to the Indian Ocean. The United States, which is located on the Western Hemisphere, is bordered by Mexico and Canada and is between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Separated not only by the Atlantic Ocean, Somalia and the United States are also separated by the differences in economies and populations. These two countries that are quite opposite in size have some similarities in their governments and education systems. Somalia is one of the world’s poorest and least developed countries (Campbell). Because of the Civil War, which broke out in 1991, much of Somalia’s economy has been devastated. The war left many homeless and drove them to raise livestock as a means of survival. The economy used to be based on exports of cattle, goats, and bananas but as of early 1992 much of the economic trade had come to a halt. Now the economy is primarily based on the raising of livestock, which accounts for 40% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Alhaus). Due to overgrazing, soil erosion, and the clearing away of many trees, Somalia has very few natural resources, which have not been exploited. Known deposits include petroleum, copper, magnesium, gypsum, and iron (â€Å"Somalian Economy"). Before the war, Somalia had a well-functioning democratic republic government. Under the 1979 Constitution, the president held executive power. The president was the head and leader of the country’s sole legal political party, The Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party. Elected to serve a 7-year term, the president was nominated by the party’s central committee. Ever since the civil war in 1991, when the government collapsed, Somalia has been in a state of civil war and anarchy (â€Å"Somalian Government†). Somalia is one of the countries in the world with the least diversity among the people. 98.8% of the population is made up of ethnic Somalis (Kraus). Other minority groups include Arabs, Indians, Italians, and Pakistanis. Most Somalis are nomadic or semi nomadic herders of livestock. The rest are either crop farmers or inhabitants of the few urban centers. The official languages of the country are Somali and Arabic and the state religion is Islam (â€Å"Somalian People†). Primary education for children of at least six years was mandatory for Somalians. Many ... ...CD-ROM. Rediman: Microsoft, 1999. 7. â€Å"Somalian Economy.† 1 March 1999. Masters degree application essays

Essay 1 (1,000 words)Describe your career progress to date and your future short-term and long-term goals. How do you expect an MBA to help you achieve these goals, and why is now the best time for you to join our program?Content:A master is ever, but a learner, goes an old Chinese saying. The same is true for any man, no one may call himself a master who believes he knows all there is about his subject. In today’s ever changing, globalized-world, a true master must continue learning if he is to remain competitive. I do not claim to be a master trader. However, I too believe in the value of higher learning. After graduating high school, and having worked for two summers in a large investment bank, I started my own investment management firm at the tender age of 19. With the help of a few angel investors who entrusted me with $50,000 each, I not only significantly grew their investments but the profits from my business were sufficient to fund my four years of university studies AND finance my travel to several countries mentoring high school children and visiting mentoring programs outside of the USA.In my travels I raised money for the university which I attended. During and after my tenure in the university I was served the role of their European ambassador. I have also done the same work for several non-profit organizations such as ABC, DEF, and GHI, all of which focus on the mentoring and training of leadership skills to high school students for them to become better community leaders. My leadership in a community oriented NGO is different from the type of leadership I exercise at work. In my business the objective is to maximize the value of our investor’s money. Success is measured by the growth in their investments and the increased trust this generates. By comparison Ulpan is about giving educational opportunities to predominantly Jewish high school students. ORT is very similar in its goals. My hard work is rewarded by seeing our beneficiari es motivated and eager to take the path of higher education as a means to success. The drastically different metrics of my community service broadens my horizon as a leader. My current job trading at an investment firm, I improved their existing procedures for monitoring our market positions during volatile periods and developed a â€Å"pop-up† system to handle trades more efficiently and make decisions faster. I made an immediate impact. We are now able to monitor approximately 10% of our daily volume and take property risk management decisions in a fast and volatile market where time is of the essence.Using my native insight I found an opportunity for growth in the company. However, I faced the inertia associate with any kind of meaningful change. Despite the cost of lost, personal, man hours. I pushed my plan past the bureaucracy offering potential benefits that far outweighed the costs of the project. Taking responsibility for my unpopular stance, my assumption of leadersh ip led to my taking the risk of losing my job if the project failed. With a lack of popular support a failure to improve profits or a net loss would severely afflict my reputation in the firm and in the industry. However I stood my ground and pursued what I knew was a good idea. As a result, I was now looked upon as a leader that brought positive change to my firm.Even in my early youth I understood that my current level of learning was not enough. By practicing what I had already learned and working in the field of my choice I was able to expand my practical knowledge. However, I also believe that practical experience must go hand-in-hand with expanded theoretical training. Hence, I desire to obtain an MBA.My ultimate goal is to head a financial firm which will manage wealth for non-profit organizations to help them grow at a faster pace and be able to focus more on their advocacies in their respective communities rather than struggling to raise funds and managing assets, tasks tha t are far from their competencies. An MBA will help me achieve this dream by expanding my horizons and making me even more capable of competing for marginal gains and derivatives that have become harder and harder to obtain. In the United States, this is more common with university endowments and major non-profit organizations which have asset managers steering the funds to competitive investment returns. However, in Europe and Asia, this almost doesn’t exist. As a result, most European and Asian NGOs are in quandary trying to husband their funds effectively but at the same need to disburse it for their projects.I want to bridge this gap and bring financial management expertise to global non-profits and help them become even stronger. By my efforts, I will allow the non-profits to bring better service to the community, faster, and more efficiently. An MBA will enhance my skills and improve my ability to maximize the wealth of these organizations and spare them from the having to worry about raising funds.I take personal pride as I have been involved in my own community, mentoring high school students, helping them make decisions about their future, whether it be academically, professionally or personally. My work with several non-profits, coupled with my financial expertise as a trader can bring tremendous change to both the financial and non-profit industries.I want to create this new niche, a new service and make the non-profit sector even more influential. This is my dream. This is my goal. And this brings my two passions, the financial market and community service, into one, gratifying job. With an MBA, the skills learned, the network I have access to, I can realize this dream. Now is the time to go for it. My hopes are high and my time is neigh. I am young, eager and hungry for wisdom, wisdom I will gladly put to good use.Essay 2 (500 words)Tell us a situation in which you were an outsider. What did you learn from the experience?Content:When I first joined my current firm an archaic system was used to monitor trades. Everyday there were orders passed through our desk. This resulted in too much effort diverted to time consuming monitoring work and we ran the peril of having to make risk management decisions on the spot. Often we would have to wait until the end of the day to review our book and take action on hedging ourselves. This manner of operations was untenable, in the volatile industry I was in, up to the minute decision making was vital to success or failure. To improve this, I immediately proposed a â€Å"pop-up† window function that takes snapshots of all the vital information we would need   to know about the orders passing through our desks. For example, trade size, currency traded and margin level are included in this data. This drastically improved the way the trading desk monitors transactions, especially in times of extreme market volume and volatility.Regretfully, I encountered considerable resistance f rom my peers and upper management. Our technical department said it would take months to develop the proposed system because they were overloaded with work and writing the script would take weeks. Stephane, our head of trading appreciated my initiative but failed to prioritize it. Fortunately, our managing director, Nick gave his approval for my leadership in this project. With his approval in hand, I put pen to paper, outlining the method which I wanted implemented and convinced our technical department to prioritize the project. I wrote them a memo stating very clearly that upper management fully supported my efforts and I emphasized that successful implementation would boost profits on a daily basis. This in turn would put the technical department in the limelight for having developed such a useful tool.My inspirational leadership conscripted the aid of our technical department and the pop-up was developed in one week and was an immediate success. We are now able to monitor approx imately 10% of our daily volume, which amounts to $150 million, and take proper risk management decisions in the fast, volatile market where time is of the essence. Based on my estimates, this results in a cost savings of about 4% a month which redound to increased profits.Using my native insight I found an opportunity for growth in the company. However, I faced the inertia associate with any kind of meaningful change. Despite the cost of lost, personal, man hours. I pushed my plan past the bureaucracy offering potential benefits that far outweighed the costs of the project. Taking responsibility for my unpopular stance, my assumption of leadership led to my taking the risk of losing my job if the project failed. With a lack of popular support a failure to improve profits or a net loss would severely afflict my reputation in the firm and in the industry. However I stood my ground and pursued what I knew was a good idea. As a result, I was now looked upon as a leader that brought pos itive change to my firm.Essay 3 (500 words)Where in your background would we find evidence of your leadership capacity and/or potential?Evidence of my leadership potential can be found in my work as project organizer for Ulpan in Warsaw, Poland and The ORT Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland. Ulpan provides educational opportunities for high school students, who are predominantly Jewish, who seek a better education in the United States. The ORT foundation provides mentoring to high school students to help them decide on career-paths and how to go about realizing their professional dreams.I organized cross-border contact through mail and email correspondence, allowing young people to build and maintain connections with peers in the US. My accomplishments with these two organizations are integrally associated with me and very close to my heart. As a child, I was helped by a mentor, David, and with his help, have succeeded in pursuing my dreams with much confidence.NGO work requires out- of-the-box thinking and creative decision making. For example, bringing a Jewish teenager from the Warsaw ghetto and providing him with a scholarship to study in a University requires a wide variety of skills. First, the child must be motivated to make the most out of his talents. I must be inspirational and optimistic to provide the necessary motivation. Second, If the mentee still has areas of improvement I may be tasked with nurturing and uncovering his talents.Third, obtaining a scholarship will require taking with benefactors who may later become potential investors in the child’s future. This requires negotiation skills equal to that of a boardroom raider. Finally, my decisions require reflective hindsight because in many ways I am responsible to the benefactors for the success of their beneficiary. In the end nothing is more rewarding than receiving letters from the student that he is doing well in school and on the way to a bright future.NGO work is a challenging as a ny task on the trading floor. It makes the most out of my skills and encourages me to continue learning. My unique background as a trader brings a skill set that is not common in the Ulpan or ORT foundation, making my contributions even more valuable to these organizations. My background and insight have resulted in the foundation taking opportunities it might have otherwise not identified. Finally, because I am constantly learning my leadership in these foundations have given me valuable experiences in dealing with others that I can carry with me back to my day job,My leadership in a community oriented NGO is different from the type of leadership I exercise at work. In my business the objective is to maximize the value of our investor’s money. Success is measured by the growth in their investments and the increased trust this generates. By comparison Ulpan is about giving educational opportunities to predominantly Jewish high school students. ORT is very similar in its goals . My hard work is rewarded by seeing our beneficiaries motivated and eager to take the path of higher education as a means to success. The drastically different metrics of my community service broadens my horizon as a leader.
